Young African Rheumatologists Network (YARN)

Terms of Reference

YARN aims to empower young African rheumatologists to advance their careers, improve patient care, and promote rheumatology research in Africa.

Objectives

  • Foster collaboration and networking among young African rheumatologists.
  • Provide mentorship and career development opportunities.
  • Enhance research and education in rheumatology.
  • Promote awareness and advocacy for rheumatology in Africa.



Membership

  • Open to rheumatologists aged 40 or younger.
  • African citizenship or residency.
  • AFLAR membership.

Governance

  • YARN Steering Committee (5-7 members):
    – Chairperson
    – Vice-Chairperson
    – Secretary
    – Treasurer
    – 2-3 additional members
  • Elections: Every 2 years.

Responsibilities:

  1. Organize annual meetings and workshops.
  2.  Develop educational programs and webinars.
  3. Facilitate research collaborations and grants.
  4. Create online forums and social media groups.
  5.  Represent YARN at AFLAR meetings.

Linkage with AFLAR

YARN serves as AFLAR’s youth wing, promoting rheumatology development among young professionals.

Development Agenda

Short-term (2024-2026)

  1. Establish YARN’s governance structure.
  2. Develop mentorship programs.
  3. Organize annual workshops and webinars.
  4.  Enhance online presence

Medium-term (2027-2030):

  1. Launch research grants.
  2. Develop continuing education programs.
  3. Establish international partnerships.
  4. Increase YARN’s representation within AFLAR

Long-term (2031-2035):

  1. Develop leadership training programs.
  2. Establish a YARN-AFLAR joint research fund.
  3. Host pan-African rheumatology conferences.
  4. Strengthen collaborations with African healthcare systems.

AFLAR Support

  1. Financial support.
  2. Strategic guidance and mentorship.
  3. Access to AFLAR’s network and resources.
  4. Joint advocacy efforts.

YARN’s Contributions

  1. Fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.
  2. Enhanced representation of young rheumatologists.
  3. Increased membership and engagement.
  4. Support for AFLAR’s strategic objectives.

Meetings:

  1. Annual General Meeting (AGM) of AFLAR.
  2.  Bi-annual Steering Committee meetings.

Communication:  Social media: Twitter,  Facebook,  LinkedIn.

Amendments

These Terms of Reference may be amended by a 2/3 majority vote from steering committee members only after approval is sought from AFLAR EXCO.By adopting these Terms of Reference, YARN aims to create a vibrant network of young African rheumatologists committed to advancing rheumatology care and research in Africa
