This July, we are delighted to shine the spotlight on Dr. Pierrot Lebughe, a distinguished rheumatologist making significant paces in the field. Dr. Lebughe is currently finalizing his PhD at KU Leuven in Belgium, focusing on groundbreaking research in Spondyloarthritis and the intestinal microbiota in inflammatory and autoimmune rheumatism. Born in Kinshasa, DRC, Dr. Lebughe’s journey from his early education at Boboto College to his current academic and clinical roles is a testament to his dedication and passion for rheumatology. His work at both the University Hospital of Kinshasa and KU Leuven bridges continents and brings global perspectives to local challenges.
Dr. Lebughe serves as the Clinical Head of Rheumatology at the University Hospital of Kinshasa, where his expertise is instrumental in advancing rheumatologic care. His research delves into the immunogenetic factors of Spondyloarthritis in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is exploring the local environmental factors, especially the impact of infections on the expression of the SpA phenotype.
In collaboration with the Congolese Society of Rheumatology, Dr. Lebughe is set to embark on a field study aimed at raising awareness and facilitating the early detection of arthritis. This study will target general practitioners and health professionals at primary healthcare levels and secondary hospitals, underscoring his commitment to improving healthcare delivery.
Dr. Lebughe’s academic journey is impressive, with a specialization in Internal Medicine and a Rheumatology certificate from the University Hospital of Kinshasa. His dedication to his field is evident from his participation in numerous international conferences and his senior academic staff member role.
Beyond his clinical and research endeavors, Dr. Lebughe is an active Congolese Society of Rheumatology vice-president and a member of several prestigious rheumatology societies, including AFLAR and PAFLAR. His contributions to medical literature and his role as a reviewer for esteemed journals further highlight his influence in the field.
