Personality Spotlight for October: Professor Daiyabu Alhaji Ibrahim, MBBS, FWACP

About this personality

This month, AFLAR is proud to highlight Dr. Becky Abdissa Adugna, a dedicated rheumatologist and passionate advocate for improving African rheumatology care. With a strong background in internal medicine and specialized training in rheumatology, Dr. Adugna has dedicated his career to enhancing clinical knowledge and mentoring the next generation of specialists.

 He is the first rheumatologist in Ethiopia. He has a Doctorate of Medicine from Jimma University, Ethiopia, a subspecialty Certificate in Rheumatology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and a Specialty Certificate in Internal Medicine from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He has also expanded his expertise through international training programs, including the EULAR Online Course on Rheumatic Diseases.

Dr. Adugna currently heads the Rheumatology Unit in the Department of Internal Medicine at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. His leadership extends beyond administration, as he actively coordinates clinical activities, mentors medical students and professionals, and leads research initiatives in rheumatology.

An Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, He is deeply involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. Since 2017, he has played a pivotal role in training future medical professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to address the challenges of rheumatic diseases in Ethiopia and beyond.

Dr. Adugna is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Ethiopian Society of Internal Medicine, the South African Rheumatology Association (SARAA), and the African League Against Rheumatism (AFLAR).

His commitment to AFLAR’s mission aligns with his goal of improving access to quality rheumatology care across Africa.
Through his unwavering dedication to education, research, and patient care, Dr. Adugna inspires young medical professionals and researchers in Africa. His contributions continue to shape the future of rheumatology in the region.
